Society in Mirzapur

The social life of Mirzapur presents a picture of a sad, underdeveloped region of India. While over 50 per cent of the population struggles hard for their daily square meal, poor agricultural growth and unreliable economic sector further worsens the scenario. A number of charitable organisations have set up their quarters in this undeveloped region, hoping to shed some positive light to this other dark and gloomy place.

There are a couple of orphanages in Mirzapur that are engaged in looking after of homeless, parentless and destitute kids. CREDA Mirzapur


Centre for Rural Education and Development Action, also known as CREDA is one of the most recognised non-profitable organisations in Mirzapur. CREDA came into existence in 1982 and was established by a group of social workers devoted to work for the socially backwards in the region. In its initial stage, CREDA was mostly focussed on working with children and eradicating child labour. Their main aim was to provide the children a care-free, happy and educated childhood.

CREDA continues to play a big role in withdrawing child labour quite prevalent in the carpet industry. It has also played vital roles in the sectors of health, women empowerment, eradicating child labour, agriculture and vocational training of villagers.

The organisation has set up a number of Community Cottage Schools throughout Mirzapur. It is mainly dedicated to adolescent boys and girls in areas where there are no provision for formal schooling and especially for girls who had to drop out from schools for various reasons. These schools accommodate about 50 students and a teacher.

CREDA also looks after the health of these children. They are provided with the mid-day meals so as to encourage them to come to schools. CREDA also organise health training programmes and makes the residents aware of first aid and reproductive health issues. CREDA works on the “Clean Village” campaign and makes people aware of the importance of a clean and hygienic environment and surrounding. It also organises health check up camps for the villagers at regular interval.

This charitable organisational has also played a vital role in setting up Self-Help Groups in the village as a part of its women empowerment programme. Each group is provided with a basic Rs 10,000 as an initial investment to start up its own business.

CREDA has also introduced the concept of kitchen gardening among the villagers and made them aware of the importance of vegetables and fruits to maintain a healthy life. It has also started the Joint Forest Management Programme where its main task is village mapping and peparing Village Forest Micro Plan.

Vocational courses for women on carpet weaving and other handmade crafts are also a part of CREDA’s initiative to make Mirzapur residents reach out for a comfortable and prosperous life.
